I'm canadian and I'm just wondering what the diffirtence is between a republican and a democrat?

Actually I'm an American I don't fully understand the differance, I choose not to choose a party. When I vote (and I do) I look at the character and resume of the man himself, I'll fully admit that I'm politically retarded and when I talk politics with anyone I'm just pulling shit outta my ass half the time. I voted for Gore but not because I liked him but because I felt he was the lesser of two evils and I know Nader fans don't want to hear this but my vote would have went to him if I thought I wouldn't have been throwing my vote away. 8) I'll stick up for you anyday GG  ~~Will~~ |

its hard to put the two into catergories because theyre both so diverse, but for the most part:
Republicans= support older policies, usually more conservative, against abortion, against minorities
Democrats= more liberal, new policies, pro-choice etc.

Playboy, the type of republican you're describing is someone to the far right, an extremist! I'm a republican, and I certanly am not against minorities, I don't subscribe to old fashioned views about certain policies, and I am pro choice. Not all republican politians are that far to the right. You seem bias in your opinions about republicans. Oh, CM, you can watch my back anytime. |

I guess I would be a republican because of the minority thing.I'm definitely against them being brought into Canada.I don't really follow politics in Canada but I do know the Liberals run our country and there fucken useless.They've brought Canada to an all time low financially.

the definition of the republicans being right wing and the democrats left wing is fairly well accepted, but i would argue that democrats are just less far to the right but still right wing. i mean the left, ie socialists, communists, environmentalists etc would hardly be very big fans of either of those two.
ralph nadar, did someone mention him? now he is better than bush or gore. and as for rudolph guliani i remember that guy being labelled a nazi 2 years ago, now he's a hero?

Just throwing in my 2 cents (although I don't really like talking politics because I'm ignorant too). I'm very in the middle myself of the two main parties, but consider myself Republican on paper. I am pro-choice, pro-gun (NRA), and not against minorities in any way.
I did throw my vote away one year when I voted for Perot.

IMHO giving Perot a vote is bascially throwing it away ;D. I saw a bumper sticker that said "Think Nader, Vote Gore" i think that is lame, because even the minimal votes do matter.
