Giallo means yellow. They are basically films that play like slashers but have more of a mystery element. The reason they are called Giallo is because all the novels were written with yellow pages.

I'm a big Giallo fan, have been for years. Some can be real shot, but those done by Argento, Bava, Martino and Lado are really good. Slasher, to me, are just a group of kids in the woods, a building, hell you just name the setting, they are there to have sex and get killed. There is usually never much of a surprise on who the killer is. That can be said to some degre about giallo's. I just think they try and give you a good little mystery to go along with the slashing.
cheers

Well said Argentoholic and Dwhots.
American slasher movies are all pretty firmly based on the Italian giallo tradition anyway. John Carpenter constantly refers to Halloween as his Dario Argento movie.
But as already stated, the usually far more classier Italian giallos normally have a great deal more plot to 'em.

Giallos for me are still as hit-or-miss as slashers. I enjoy both, but I often prefer the informality of the slasher to the occasionally overinflated murder-mystery.

Gialli are from Italian mystery novels from the 40's and 50's that had yellow covers. Their pages were white actually. They had many characteristics that outraged many people, the fact that there were driven to have mainly female victims. The women were brutally murdered, it was only the odd moment when a male was killed. Like the films, they were very inventive in terms of the way they killed. They are riddled with what are called RED HERRINGS or false leads into who might be the killer. The killer would usually wear black gloves, long dark trench coat and something covering a good percent of their head and face. Hope this helps out!
